David Richard was born to Henry and Rebecca Walker on 17 February 1894 at Peckham in London. His father died in 1900. The 1901 Census shows David living at home with his mother and brother and sister. David was admitted to the Orphan Working School on 23 May 1902, aged 8, and left the School in December 1908, when he was fourteen. By the time of the 1911 Census, he was working as a Warehouseman and living in Bermondsey, London. David enlisted for military service in Lambeth and joined 16th (County of London) Battalion (Queen’s Westminster Rifles), London Regiment; he may also have served with 12th Battalion. Rifleman Walker was killed in action on 17 August 1917. He is buried in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery, outside Ieper (formerly Ypres) in Belgium. The Cemetery contains the graves of 1,538 casualties of the War.
