Albert Frederick George was born to Albert and Sarah Savage on 18 October 1897 in London. Albert was admitted to the Orphan Working School and Alexandra Orphanage in May 1906, following the death of his father. He left the School at age 14, before Christmas 1911. Albert volunteered for military service when he was not yet eighteen years old, and enlisted at Bloomsbury, London, into the London Regiment, where he served with both the 1st and 13th Battalions. He was despatched to the Egyptian theatre in August 1915. He later fought on the Western Front in France. L/Cpl Savage died of wounds received in battle, on 28 November 1917, shortly after his twentieth birthday. He is buried at Hermies Hill British Cemetery, in the town of Hermies in the Pas de Calais area of France, together with over 700 identified casualties from nearby battlefields and a further 300 unidentified losses.
