Herbert Henry was born to Ernest and Sarah Dutton on 13 May 1898 at Wootton. Following the death of his father, two years later in South Africa, Herbert was admitted to the Alexandra Orphanage, aged 3. He left the Orphan Working School and Alexandra Orphanage in 1912, just after his fourteenth birthday. He enlisted for military service in Cardiff and joined 15th Battalion, Welsh Regiment. Private Dutton was killed in action on 8 October 1918, aged 20. He is buried at Unicorn Cemetery, near Vendhuile in France. Much of this cemetery was formed after the armistice, for graves brought in from surrounding battlefields, isolated sites and nearby small cemeteries. The Cemetery contains around 1,000 First World War graves. [Note: Listed as Henry Dutton in OWS census return for 1911; as Herbert Dutton in 1901 Census and Roll of Honour read out annually at our Remembrance Service; H. H. Dutton in Forces War Records and Herbert Henry Dutton in ‘UK Soldiers Died in the Great War’]
